Unbuilt

Shipping Policy

Unbuilt, Inc.
Effective Date: April 2026

1. Overview

Unbuilt is a marketplace for surplus construction and building materials. Items on our platform range from small hardware to multi-ton pallets of tile and stone, and shipping and fulfillment vary by listing.

Each listing page specifies the available shipping methods, costs, and fulfillment details for that item. Review the listing carefully before purchasing so you know what to expect.

This policy explains how shipping works on Unbuilt, with particular attention to freight delivery and oversized items — situations that may be unfamiliar if you have not purchased building materials online before.

2. Shipping Methods

The shipping method for your order depends on the item's size, weight, and fragility. The available method and cost are displayed on the listing page or calculated at checkout.

Parcel Shipping

Small and medium items that fall within standard carrier size and weight limits ship via parcel carriers such as USPS, UPS, or FedEx. Tracking information is provided when available.

LTL Freight

Large, heavy, or palletized items — such as tile, stone, lumber, and door systems — ship via less-than-truckload (LTL) freight carriers. See Section 4 for detailed guidance on receiving freight deliveries.

Local Pickup

Local pickup is available for many items on Unbuilt and is often the most practical option for large or heavy building materials. See Section 5 for pickup guidelines.

3. Fulfillment

Shipping and fulfillment are handled as specified in the listing. Depending on the item, fulfillment may be managed by the seller directly or coordinated by Unbuilt on the seller's behalf.

  • Seller fulfillment. For some listings, the seller is responsible for packaging, choosing a carrier, and shipping the item. Confirm the shipping method, cost, timeline, and any logistics with the seller before purchasing.
  • Unbuilt-coordinated fulfillment. For other listings, Unbuilt coordinates shipping and logistics on behalf of the seller as a service. The seller retains ownership of the goods. Unbuilt uses third-party carriers for all shipments it coordinates — Unbuilt is not the carrier, shipper, or insurer of goods.

In all cases:

  • Unbuilt is a facilitator. Even when Unbuilt arranges shipping, it does so as a service on behalf of the seller. Unbuilt does not operate delivery vehicles, is not the carrier, and is not liable for carrier delays, service failures, or performance issues.
  • Trackable, insured shipping is recommended. Unbuilt strongly recommends that all shipments use trackable, insured shipping methods. Buyers should request tracking information.
  • Geographic availability. Unbuilt-coordinated shipments currently ship within the United States only. International shipping is not available at this time.

Processing and Delivery

  • Processing time: Typically 3-7 business days. Building materials may require custom crating, palletizing, or special packaging, which can extend processing time.
  • Delivery estimates are estimates only and are not guaranteed. Freight shipments in particular can experience delays due to carrier scheduling, route changes, or weather.
  • Tracking information is provided when available. Freight shipments may have less granular tracking than parcel shipments.
  • Signature may be required for high-value items.

4. Freight and Oversized Items

Many building materials are too large or heavy for standard parcel shipping and require LTL (less-than-truckload) freight delivery. If you have not received a freight delivery before, please read this section carefully.

What to Expect

  • Curbside or loading dock delivery. Standard freight delivery means the carrier delivers to the curb, driveway, or loading dock. It does not include carrying items inside your home, garage, or job site.
  • You must be able to unload. The buyer is responsible for providing appropriate equipment and labor to unload items from the truck. For heavy items (pallets of tile, stone slabs, lumber bundles), this may require a forklift, pallet jack, or multiple people.
  • Liftgate service lowers items from the truck to ground level and may be available at additional cost. If you do not have a loading dock or forklift, you likely need liftgate service.
  • Inside delivery or white glove service is available for select items at additional cost, where noted on the listing or at checkout.
  • Delivery appointments. Freight carriers typically call to schedule a delivery window. Someone must be present to receive and inspect the shipment.

Inspecting Freight Deliveries

This is the most important part of receiving a freight shipment:

  1. Inspect all items before signing the Bill of Lading (BOL). Open packaging and check for damage while the driver is present.
  2. Note ANY damage on the BOL before signing. Write a specific description (e.g., "2 boxes crushed, visible broken tiles" or "corner of pallet damaged, contents shifted"). Take photographs.
  3. If you sign "clean" (no damage noted), filing a freight damage claim becomes extremely difficult. Carriers routinely deny claims when the BOL was signed without exceptions.
  4. Photograph everything — the items, the packaging, the truck, and the signed BOL with your damage notes.
  5. If damage is severe, you may refuse the shipment. Contact customer_support@unbuilt.co before refusing if possible, or immediately after.

5. Local Pickup

Local pickup is available for many items on Unbuilt and is often the most practical option for large or heavy building materials.

  • Pickup location and hours are communicated after purchase. The listing page indicates whether pickup is available.
  • Bring the right vehicle and help. The buyer is responsible for providing an appropriate vehicle and sufficient labor to load and transport the items. Building materials can be extremely heavy and may require a truck, trailer, or van.
  • Inspect items at pickup. Examine items thoroughly before leaving. Pickup constitutes acceptance of the item's condition with respect to visible defects.
  • Damage after pickup is the buyer's responsibility. Once you take possession of the items, you are responsible for any damage that occurs during your transport.

6. Packaging

  • Packaging is appropriate for the type of building material being shipped and may include palletizing, crating, corner protectors, stretch wrapping, or other methods suited to the item.
  • Some items may require special crating or packaging. Re-packaging fees may apply and will be reflected in the shipping cost or item price.
  • For seller-fulfilled listings, the seller is responsible for proper packaging. Buyers should confirm packaging plans with the seller, especially for fragile items like tile and stone.

7. Risk of Loss

Risk of loss determines who bears the financial responsibility if items are lost or damaged during shipping.

Fulfillment ScenarioRisk of Loss Transfers
Shipped itemsUpon delivery of the item to the carrier (shipment contract per UCC §2-509)
Local pickupUpon buyer's pickup of the item

For shipped items, once the carrier takes possession of the item, the risk of loss or damage in transit passes to the buyer. Unbuilt is not an insurer of goods in transit, even when Unbuilt coordinates shipping on behalf of the seller.

Shipping insurance. Unbuilt recommends that buyers consider purchasing shipping insurance for high-value items where available, particularly for fragile materials like natural stone, porcelain tile, and glass.
